Middle School Student Work
The Built World unit was inspired after working with an architect in designing a renovation on my home and having traveled to many places to experience the world of architecture, landscape design, and the vast structures that house our lives and our art. Students explored concepts in perspective drawing, color, and engineering 2-dimensional designs into 3-dimensional works. Our essential questions were: What is perspective? How is the environment we build for ourselves reflective of our lives, cultures, and society? What is the relationship between nature and commercial and residential development? Do architecture, engineering and technology have a place in the art world? Students studied perspective drawing concepts and created fantasy treehouse designs. They also took photos from 5 different perspectives of their house or another building that had some personal significance and then chose one as a reference photo and created an original painting in the Edward Hopper tradition, working from the photo and accurately reproducing the perspective and interpreting the colors. New concepts in perspective drawing, color theory, paint mixing, and painting techniques were introduced.
